Quick update (pictures)

Owls


Kindergartners make an Earth model after learning the Earth's structure. The model shows the crust and atmosphere.



Teacher Juliette helps the owls understand what causes wind. The kids learned about the atmosphere - I showed them a book and short video explaining what causes wind and then brought this demonstration. The aquarium has a cold side (with ice cubes) and a warm side (lamp). We burned an incense over the aquarium and the kids were able to see the smoke traveling from the cold to the warm side. 





Magpies

First and second graders study motion. The kids were really excited about the Rube Goldberg machines, and teacher Pa and I gave them some challenges to help them better understand motion and improve their machines.


Kids explore the relationship between angles (ramps) and distance traveled.

One group decided to decrease friction in order to increase distance traveled.








Hawks




The third and fourth graders have been really busy - they are doing research projects, playing the evolution game and developing the native area. These pictures were taken during our field trip to the nurseries.





Crows




Sean Almeida, expert on solar panels, gives a presentation and answers questions about the history of photovoltaic cells. He also helped us choose a solar pump for the kids' project.

In health, kids learned about the digestive system. A big thank you to Dr. Colleen Callaghan, who prepared and presented hands on, interesting lessons for the kids (hawks and crows).
Fifth and sixth graders draw their ideas for the aqueduct and fountain projects. They had to include specific labels and a list of materials needed for their ideas.







The kids worked hard designing and constructing the aqueduct and fountain.
