Exciting trimester - post fire field trip, big planting day and science fair!!!

In February the Eagles (2-4) and Crows (5-6) went back to the burnt site in Winters to collect data on their study areas.

On February 12th we had our big planting day. Karleen Vollherbst from US Fish and Wildlife Service helped us plant ~ 300 plants in our native areas. The kids added compost to the soil, planted all plants and made signs for  the native areas. The kids also created a gravel path around the planting areas. We got a lot done. It was a very exciting day.

Below you will find pictures, with short descriptions, of the kids getting ready for the science fair. The younger kids (k-1) studied space, 2-4 graders studied borax crystals/scientific method, weather and engineering, and 5-6 graders studied climate change (Earth Science) and engineering.

Owls learned about the planets in our system through books and experts. Two aerospace engineers visited the class and helped them make a summary poster.

Owls making models of the solar system.

Older elementary kids helping owls make their space station.

Kids dehydrated food to take to space, and bagged them.

Painting space background to transform their classroom into a space station.

Learning what causes the phases of the moon.

Making jet packs.

Writing summaries explaining everything in their space station.

Painting planets

Eagles (2-4) building boats

As part of their weather study, Eagles reviewed the water cycle and made models showing how water evaporates from different areas - including lakes and ocean.

Kids presenting their boats  and sharing rationale for their designs.

Working on steam boat model

Testing steam boats.

Crows (5-6) learned about the carbon cycle and climate change. They wrote essays, watched Fuel documentary and engineered things to lower the school's carbon footprint. Kids built bicycle powered blender and generator.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pictures during the science fair. If anyone has pictures of the kids presenting their projects please email me so that I can add them to the blog. : )
